Directed by renowned choreographer Zhang Jigang, "Red Cliff" aims to provide a brand new take on the ancient genre.

"Red Cliff" tells of a well known battle during the three kingdoms period, around two hundred AD. It's a well-known story to all Chinese families: Founder of the Shu Kingdom Liu Bei and founder of Wu Kingdom Sun Quan combined to defeat the mighty northern warlord Cao Cao. The crucial battle took place at Red Cliff, where Cao's army was defeated and was forced to withdraw to the north.

The opera tells the story in six compelling acts, and includes the moments when Cao declares war on the south, Zhuge Liang, strategist of the Shu kingdom persuaded Sun Quan to form an alliance, and the two main battle scenes.
