Migrant workers are extremely vulnerable to the global economic downturn, with some already losing their jobs. Following a government appeal, some bosses have already begun efforts to improve migrant workers' skills and knowledge.

Wei Tianfu from Guizhou has worked at a building site in Guangzhou for more than half a year. With the skill of re-bar through training, he has easily found work. Recently, he persuaded his wife to come to Guangzhou to work with him.

Wei said,"We work here as a couple, and the company arranged accommodations and training for us. We can also attend staff meetings. The pay is good. All of this makes us feel assured and happy with our work."

Each migrant worker here has a working file, in which his resume, labor contract, skill certificates, and company evaluation are included. These workers say the files make them feel responsible for the building site. And with their files, it will be easier for them to seek new jobs.

Wu Chengfu, the DEP. GEN. Manager of China Railway #4 Engineering Group, said,"Our company treats the migrant workers the same as permanent ones. They also attend skills training arranged by the company, and are evaluated after and can get a certificate. With such a system, we hope to help migrant workers transform from labor-intensive workers into skill-intensive workers. "

Migrant workers account for 87 percent of those employed at this building site. All of them have been taking part in a series of education and training projects. They say their new knowledge and skills have ensured that they are more competitive... and that more opportunities are waiting for them in the future.
