Adjust font size:

From the euro coin to chocolates and T-shirts, the face of Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is a familiar sight. Earlier this year, a British expert on Mozart said that a previously unidentified painting of the Austrian genius in his late years is the closest artistic impression of what Mozart really looked like. But the face of Austria's main export changes from one object to the next, making it difficult to know which one is the real Mozart.

Born in Salzburg, the consecration of Mozart as the best composer of his time took place after his arrival in Vienna in 1781, aged 25.

It was here that Mozart wrote his best operas, piano concertos and symphonies, soon overshadowing the work of renowned composers Joseph Haydn, Christoph Gluck and Antonio Salieri.
