When snow melts, it turns to mush, but for some, that's no substitute for mud. Over 240 competitors lined up to get down and dirty for the annual Maldon Mud Race on Sunday. Not only did the largest ever field have to deal with getting stuck in the mud, it was also one of the coldest days of winter in the United Kindom.

The temperature was below freezing. The distance of the race was only 400 metres across the Blackwater river. But that makes it sound easier than it is. Soon it was time to face the challenge. Those in front had the better of the conditions. But soon they found themselves up to their ankles in the soft black mud. Others discovered that the best tactic was to crawl along on all fours.

The winner was 36-year old Stuart Putt from Boreham in Hertfordshire. He finished in three minutes and 49 seconds - only 11 seconds slower than the 2007 winner. Despite the ugly conditions, it was all for a beautiful cause. Over 29 thousand US dollars was raised for charity.
