Since mid-July, drought has spread across East Africa. The worst drought in 60 years made famine a harsh daily reality for millions in Somali, Ethiopia and Kenya. On July 20, the United Nations officially declared famine in two regions of southern Somalia, the first time a famine was declared by the U.N. in nearly 30 years. The Chinese government and the Red Cross Society of China sent large amounts of emergency food aid and funds to the affected African countries to help them cope with the severe drought.
