At the invitation of President Hu Jintao, Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, visited China from May 20 to 26, 2011. During his stay in China, he traveled to Heilongjiang, Jilin and Jiangsu provinces. He also made a stop in Beijing, where he met with Hu and Premier Wen Jiabao. During his talks with Hu, Kim repeatedly stressed that the younger generation of leaders should continue the DPRK-China friendship. The two leaders also discussed the disputes over DPRK's nuclear program. Kim said he hoped to ease the tension on the Korean Peninsula. This would be Kim's last diplomatic trip to China before his death on Dec. 17, 2011.
