Syria's state TV said the army inflicted hefty tolls on armed insurgents in the northern city of Aleppo Wednesday, mainly in the Salahuddien distinct.

The reports came amid confirmation that the army has waged an all-out offensive to regain control of rebel-held areas and flush out Western-backed armed rebels from Aleppo.

Earlier in the day, the state-run SANA news agency said competent authorities carried out Wednesday a "qualitative" operation against armed groups committing crimes and intimidating people in Dawar Aghyour area in Aleppo.

It added that tens of "terrorists" were killed or wounded in the attack.

SANA said three pick-up trucks equipped with Dushka machine guns were destroyed during the attack.

On the opposition side, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said clashes are still taking place inside the Salahuddien neighborhood between rebel fighters and government forces, who have stormed the neighborhood after violently bombarding it.

Meanwhile, the observatory said the neighborhoods of Hanano, Tariq al-Bab and al-Shaar in Aleppo have also been bombarded by government forces, adding that the neighborhoods of Maysaloon and al-Sakhour are also witnessing clashes.

It said the town of Tel Rif'at, in the countryside of Aleppo, was bombarded Wednesday by Syrian fighter jets, adding that three civilians have been killed by the assault so far.

The activists' claim could not be independently verified.
