Controversial Internet celebrities and people involved in scandals will be banned from appearing on TV shows, said Li Wei, vice minister of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

The senior official of China's broadcasting watchdog made the remarks at a forum focusing on the innovation of China's TV programs over the weekend in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

Li said TV stations should produce programs promoting healthy virtues and avoiding the comeback of "excessive entertainment" and the trend of vulgarization.

"Some controversial Internet celebrities and people who show off their misdeeds are invited to attend the TV programs on prime time. We must correct and reverse the problem and never make such mistake again," Li said at the forum.

In addition, several reality shows about job seekers are being ordered to stop using "aggressive" language and making inappropriate jokes and spoofs as ways to boost ratings, Li said.

Li said that the ban does not limit the right of the common people to have entertainment, but it tries to promote a healthy development of TV programs.

SARFT issued an order last year to stop provincial TV channels from airing excessive entertainment programs during prime time from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
