Tom Hooper's musical film "Les Miserables," an Oscar-hopeful, will hit Chinese cinemas on February 28, the later phase of the Spring Festival period.

Based on the musical of the same name, which is in turn based on Victor Hugo's novel, the film centers on Jean Valjean, an ex-convict in 19th-century France who struggles to build a new life.

The film has won eight nominations for the upcoming 85th Academy Awards, including nods for Best Picture, Best Actor for Hugh Jackman, and Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway. But truth be told, it's rare for the Chinese to import and appreciate a musical in China's market.
