Box office gross: 416 million yuan

Release date: Sept. 16, 2009

The film has held the record for: 10 months

Box office total gross of all films in China that year: 6.06 billion yuan

The year of 2009 was the 60th anniversary of founding of New China. The all-star cast "The Founding of A Republic" provided plenty of hype and took in 416 million yuan with its low-budget (as this film was regarded as a tribute gift to the People's Republic of China, many big name stars acted for free). It became the highest grossing Chinese-made film ever.

In the same year, 16 films grossed more than 100 million yuan, nine of which were Chinese home-made films.

However, "The Founding of A Republic" only stayed at the third position of annual general box office chart. Roland Emmerich's "2012" and Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" took the top two spot.
