"I wish to build Kala Village into the first well-off village in Danzhai County to help our villagers live much better lives."

Wang Yuhe is the Party Secretary of Kala Village in Danzhai County of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. He worked his way up by weaving birdcage in 1998. He then established a cooperative and gave 70 percent of the profits to other participants. So far, more than 160 households have taken part in the birdcage weaving cooperative, the annual turnover of which has reached 8 million yuan (US$1.2 million). With more visitors coming to learn how to weave a birdcage, an ecological rural tourism industry has been generated, injecting new impetus into the village's economic growth.
