Shaun White: You're watching my legacy
( 35, five-time Winter Olympian)
Shaun White, the three-time Winter Olympic champion, has the reputation of "the king of snowboarding halfpipe". However, during the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, he finished fourth due to a wipeout, unfortunately missing the podium.
35-year-old White announced at a press conference that Beijing 2022 would be his last Winter Olympics. His Olympic career has come to an end.
The Beijing Winter Olympics is his fifth Winter Olympic Games. Diagnosed with congenital heart defects at birth, a doctor once predicted that he would not survive beyond his 20th birthday. He not only overcame the condition, but also reached the top of snowboarding world through his determination and talent.
White won the gold medal in the halfpipe at both Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010. At the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, he missed the podium, which made people think that his era has ended. However, at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics four years later, he returned as the king and won his third Olympic gold at the age of 31.
Four years later, he came to Beijing with remarkable persistence. However, fortune did not smile on him this time. He fell on his final run. After that, he took off his helmet and slowly slid down the slope, waving to the crowd with tears in his eyes.
Tears represented his indescribable emotions. Shaun White made a bow, just like a legend made his curtain call. "Everybody's been asking me what my legacy in this sport has been, and I'm like, 'You're watching it'. These younger riders, they have been on my heels every step of the way. To see them finally surpass me is, I think deep down, what I always wanted, you know – to be beaten, to finally walk away."
