Top Legislature Fires Henan NPC Deputy

China's top legislature on Sunday announced the termination of Wang Youjie, 64, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Henan Provincial People's Congress, as deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC).

According to a circular issued by the 10th NPC Standing Committee, Wang was suspected of taking bribes and having severely breached the law and the discipline of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection put him under investigation on March 30, 2005. Later Wang offered to resign from his posts of vice chairman and NPC deputy for "having committed mistakes." The Standing Committee of the Henan Provincial People's Congress has accepted Wang's resignation.

The circular also said Dang Hongxin, 76, professor with Henan University and an NPC deputy, died of illness on June 10, 2005. His position of NPC deputy, automatically terminated.

To date, the 10th NPC has 2,986 deputies.
