Maotai, a top-grade spirit, is praised as China's national alcoholic drink. It is named after the town of the same name in Guizhou Province. Historical records show that Maotai dates back to more than 2,000 years ago. It has been used on official occasions to honor distinguished guests to the country and the state banquet.

The spirit earned worldwide fame after winning the gold medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. It is called one of the world's top three famous distilled spirits, the other two being France's cognac and the United Kingdom's scotch whisky.
