Dong liquor is now produced in the Dong Distillery in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. Zunyi is famous for its long history of wine-making. Over 1400 years ago, people began to open liquor workshop and began to brew liquor. The Cheng-Family workshop was become a most famous liquor workshop.

Dong liquor was first brewed between 1929 and 1930 by Cheng-Family Distillery and given its name in 1942. The current Zunyi Dong Distillery was established in 1957. Six years later it was recognized as a national famous liquor and has won many international awards since then. Its fragrance is weak and doesn't match the Maotai flavor. The beverage's smell comes from its production process, which is a combination of Daqu liquor and Xiaoqu liquor production techniques.
