Sichuan Province, hailed as "Celestial Treasure House" since the ancient times, is located in Southwestern China. It's one of the major agricultural production bases of China. It's also famous for boasting the largest proven natural gas reserves in the country. Sichuan has been making great efforts to develop itself into a modern hi-tech industrial center, besides focusing on such important sectors as coal, energy, iron and steel, metallurgy, auto, building materials, food processing, and wine.

Its GDP rose from 0.87 trillion yuan(US$10.91 billion) in 2006 to 1.72 trillion yuan(US$254.08 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 21,182 yuan(US$3,129), a 99.6 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped from 1.498 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 1.275 tons in 2010, a 14.89 percent decrease.

The total output of hi-tech industries hit 496.22 billion yuan (US$73.3 billion) in 2010, up by 30.2 percent from 2009, accounting for 20.9 percent of the province's total industrial output. The province's R&D spending hit 26.43 billion yuan (US$3.9 billion) in 2010, 2.5 times that of 2006.

The foreign direct investment surged by 398.3 percent from US$ 1.21 billion in 2006 to US$6.03 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$11.02 billion in 2006 to US$32.78 billion in 2010, of which, export was US$18.84 billion, up by 184.5 percent from 2006. A total of 160 of the world's top 500 companies had operations in the province.
