Located in the northern part of China, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is rich in mineral resources including rare earth, coal and silver. Great strives have been made to develop the following competitive industries: agricultural and animal husbandry, energy, metallurgy, chemicals, equipment manufacturing and high-tech.

Inner Mongolia's GDP rose from 0.49 trillion yuan(US$61.47 billion) in 2006 to 1.17 trillion yuan(US$172.83 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 47,347 yuan(US$6,994), a 130.7 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 20.64 percent from 2.413 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 1.915 tons in 2010.

The total output of hi-tech industries hit 48.98 billion yuan (US$7.24 billion) in 2010, a 37.03 percent increase from 2009. The province's R&D spending hit 6.37 billion yuan (US$0.94 billion) in 2010, 1.4 times that of 2006.

The foreign direct investment surged by 94.3 percent from US$1.74 billion in 2006 to US$3.38 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$5.95 billion in 2006 to US$8.72billion in 2010, of which export was US$3.33 billion, up by 55.7 percent from 2006.
