In general, Consumer Reports finds heavy-duty three-quarter-ton pickups to be among the most problematic vehicles in production. Specifically, the diesel-powered version of the Ram 2500 is said to be at the back of the pack. It not only received "worst" ratings for poor reliability and excessive ownership costs, but it received among the lowest road-test scores among all 2012 models. While testers praised the truck's towing abilities and payload capacity (prime attributes among buyers with purposeful needs we should note) they criticized the Ram 2500 diesel's ride and handling qualities, transmission performance, its noisy cabin and a too-high step-in height.
