US plans new strategies to contain Iran's nuclear programs

The US and five other world powers are planning talks on new strategies to contain Iran's nuclear programs.

They are waiting for a reply from Tehran on a meeting to follow up the last, abortive session nearly a year ago.

The White House says the goal of getting Iran to suspend its enrichment program remains unchanged. But Iran says it will not give up its nuclear program

Speculation is circulating as the Obama administration prepares for talks with stakeholders on Iran's nuclear programs.

Will the United States drop its conditions for talks for Iran?

Washington gave a straight answer to that question on Tuesday.

Robert Gibbs, White House Secretary, said, "The goal is and remains a suspension of Iran's illicit nuclear weapons' programme."

But three diplomats from countries involved in the talks say Washington is planning to review strategies on engaging Iran.

US government officials have declined to publicly discuss possible new strategies. But they say the immediate goal is to get Iran back to the negotiating table.

One senior official says that could even involve allowing Iran to continue enriching uranium at its current level for an as-yet undetermined length of time.

Iran insists it will not give up developing nuclear programs for civilian use.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian President, said, "Iran will go forward until it can produce the required nuclear fuel for the country and no one can stop the Iranian nation."

The United States announced last week that it will join direct talks with Iran that Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia are seeking to convene.

The talks aim to break a long deadlock over Iran's nuclear program, which the US and its allies fear aims to build atomic weapons. Iran denies the charge.
