4, Celebrities' drug problems

Celebrity drug addiction is back in the spotlight with the arrests of Taiwanese actor Coco Sun Hsing and Hong Kong actor Max Mok Siu-Chung in Beijing on April 15 for drug abuse.

Beijing TV reported that Sun cried as he confessed to having taken marijuana and ketamine for five years in the wake of two failed marriages. He also admitted to being responsible for his girlfriend's drug habit. .

On the same day as Sun's detention, Beijing police arrested Hong Kong actor Max Mok for drug use in his Chaoyang district apartment.

The arrests are hardly the first time that Chinese entertainers' drug habits have landed them in hot water with the law. A Taipei court sentenced Taiwanese actress Hsiao Shu Shen to a year in jail last year after she failed to kick her addiction while on probation. Chinese pop singer Xie Dong was also arrested on drug charges in Beijing in 2007.

Rumor has it that this recent spate of illegal drug use involves a network of more than 30 celebrities "masterminded" by mainland pop singer Sun Nan. Police, however, have categorically denied such claims.

Despite Sun Nan's public declarations of innocence, the negative impact of the scandal on both the public and his career will be hard to reverse.
