Noted Chinese author Jia Pingwa was awarded the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the French government on Feb.20, 2013. The highest honorary title in France was given in recognition of those people who have made outstanding contributions to the development of literature and arts in various parts of the world.

Jia has received many other foreign awards and honors, including the Pegasus Prize for Literature (1988), the Prix Femina Étranger Prize (1997) and the Dream of the Red Chamber Award: the World's Distinguished Novel in Chinese (2006).

Jia's major works include his novels "Abandoned City," "Shaanxi Opera," "Ancient Furnace" and “To Be Happy;” his novellas and short stories "The Good Fortune Grave" and "Wukui;" his essays "Ugly Stone," "Shangzhou Prefecture" and "The Weather."
