No Timetable for Capital Account RMB Conversions
A senior official of the People's Bank of China said on Thursday that there is no timetable to further relax regulations that govern converting the Renminbi under capital accounts.
Test for Experimental Nuclear Reactor in July
The first discharge tests of China's new generation experimental 'Tokamak' fusion device will be conducted in July or August this year. If the experiments prove successful it would be the world's first experimental nuclear fusion device to come into operation, the project leader said on Tuesday.
Domestic Airlines Increase Compensation
China has raised its maximum compensation for injury or death of passengers on domestic airlines from 70,000 yuan (US$8,750) to 400,000 yuan (US$50,000) per individual according to a newly revised regulation from China's top aviation authority. Approved by the State Council, the regulation will come into effect on March 28 this year.
Hu Jintao Lashes 'Taiwan Independence' Talk
While meeting with visiting Swiss Defence Minister, Samuel Schmid, on Tuesday afternoon Chinese President, Hu Jintao, lashed Taiwan authorities for their decision to close down the operations of its "National Unification Council" and the application of its guidelines, saying it was a "dangerous step" toward "Taiwan Independence."
China Loses Its Hold on Winter Sports in Asia
China's 14th place ranking on the Turin Winter Olympics medal tally with two golds, four silvers and five bronzes surrendered its Asian dominance in winter sports to South Korea, who placed 7th by pocketing six golds, three silvers and two bronzes, 10 of which were won in short-track speed skating events.
Shanghai Bans River Transport of Highly Toxic Chemicals
The transport of highly toxic chemicals on the Huangpu River will be prohibited as of April 1 this year, in a bid to ensure safe drinking water for Shanghai residents. Offenders face penalties of up to 100,000 yuan (US$12,500).
Forest Coverage Rises
China will work towards increasing woodland coverage in 70 percent of cities nationwide which would mean per capita public land under vegetation reaching a figure of eight square meters, Jia Zhibang, director of the State Forestry Administration (SFA) announced Monday.
Farmers' Income Surging in 2005
Chinese farmers witnessed the highest annual income increase in eight years last year. The trade in farm products grew steadily in 2005 to reach US$55.8 billion, reducing the trade deficit by 70 percent in a year, said Agricultural Minister Du Qinglin on Saturday.
Iran, China Pledge to Enhance Cooperation
Iran and China pledged on Saturday to promote the development of bilateral relations in all fields. During talks with visiting Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Lu Guozeng, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad commended China's achievements in its social construction and said that bilateral relations have undergone smooth development in recent years.
Mainland to Promote Travel to Taiwan
Chinese mainland will continue to promote cross-Straits tourism in a bid to enable the mainland residents to visit Taiwan as soon as possible, said Liu Kezhi, a senior official with the National Tourism Administration.
