On April 14, organizers said that it would be difficult to hold the Cannes film festival in its original form in 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak, and they were exploring "all contingencies" to realize the world's biggest annual celebration of cinema "in one way or another."

The event, originally scheduled for May 12 through 23, had already been postponed to the end of June through to the beginning of July. However, organizers said this is "no longer an option" after French President Emmanuel Macron said cultural festivals could not resume until mid-July at the earliest.
