6-8 Premier Wen Jiabao attends a series of summits with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Bali, Indonesia.

The premier's Bali trip scored several major achievements. First, a strategic partnership was established between China and the ASEAN. China, for the first time, signed the document on strategic partnership with a regional group and it has become the first strategic partner of the ASEAN. Second, China formally acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. Third, China prompted the promulgation of the Joint Declaration on the Promotion of Tripartite Cooperation Among China, Japan and the ROK. Fourth, the Chinese premier outlined the guidelines for cooperation between ASEAN and China, Japan and the ROK (10+3), namely, equality and consultations, mutual benefit and win-win for all, gradual process, and openness and inclusiveness.

11-14, The Third Plenary Session of the 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is held in Beijing. The meeting heard and discussed a work report delivered by General Secretary Hu Jintao at the entrustment of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. It also deliberated and approved two documents--a decision on issues regarding the improvement of the socialist market economic system and a proposal on revising part of the country's Constitution. The meeting decided to submit the two documents to the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress for deliberation.

15,At 9:09 a.m., China's domestically built manned spacecraft Shenzhou 5 blasts off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China and later enters its prefixed orbit successfully, sending the country's first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space. This is the country's first manned space flight and also the 71st launch of the Long March series rockets. China has therefore become the third country in the world capable of independently carrying out manned space activities.

20-21, President Hu Jintao attends the 11th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. In a speech delivered at the meeting, Hu briefed the participants of China's economic development, issues concerning the peg of the Chinese currency and the Chinese Government's positions on trade facilitation and liberal investment.
