2, Premier Wen Jiabao delivers a keynote speech, entitled "Toward a Win-Win Asia by Seizing Opportunities and Meeting Challenges," at the Boao Forum for Asia 2003 Annual Conference in south China's island province of Hainan. Wen said it is the consistent policy of the Chinese Government to work for an Asia that enjoys development, rejuvenation, peace and stability. He continued that China's Asia policy is aimed at achieving peace, security, cooperation and prosperity.

10, President Hu Jintao meets with former U.S. President Bill Clinton in Beijing. Hu spoke highly of Clinton's positive contribution to advancing Sino-U.S. relations.

15, Chinese scientists announce that the country has become the first in the world to complete the genome map of the silkworm, after joint efforts by more than 400 researchers lasting over five months. The sequence obtained reportedly covers 95.54 percent of the silkworm genome with an accuracy of 99.95 percent. This is the third achievement Chinese scientists have made in genome research, following the finish of 1 percent of human genome sequencing and the draft of rice genome map.

28, A spokesman with the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council says in Beijing that the Central Government is deeply concerned about relevant situations concerning "referendum legislation" in Taiwan and is paying close attention to the development of the issue. "We oppose any person who carries out separatist activities by means of 'referendum legislation'," the spokesman pointed out, adding that any attempt to separate Taiwan from China will not be tolerated.
