1, The Measures on Aid and Management for Urban Vagrants and Beggars become effective. The Measures for the Internment and Deportation of Urban Vagrants and Beggars, issued in 1982, were rescinded the same day. Internment and deportation stations established under the former system were then renamed the aid stations for vagrants and beggars. Beijing had opened four aid stations in Chaoyang, Fengtai, Haidian and Shijingshan districts.

3, The emblem of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is unveiled at a ceremony held in the Temple of Heaven in China's capital city. Entitled "Dancing Beijing," the emblem resembles a red Chinese seal enclosing a lively dancing figure that opens arms to embrace victory. It integrates an artistically reshaped Chinese character "jing," representing Beijing, with the English word "Beijing," the number "2008"and the five-ring Olympic logo.

4, Chemical weapons abandoned by Japanese troops during World War II are accidentally broken in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province in northeast China. Leaked highly toxic gas killed one person and injured more than 40 others. The severity of the accident, as well as the large amount of victims, is rare during the past 50 years.

6, A large-scale joint anti-terrorist exercise conducted by the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization begins in Kazakhstan's eastern border city of Ucharal. This is the first multilateral military activity of its kind in the organization. On August 11, the second phase of the maneuver was held in Ili in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

25, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan blames the illegal landing on the Diaoyudao Islands by a group of Japanese right-wingers for violating China's territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Chinese Foreign Ministry and Chinese Embassy in Japan were authorized to lodge solemn representations to the Japanese side, respectively.

27-29, The first round of the six-party talks on the Korean nuclear issue are held in Beijing. Delegations from China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan participated in this multilateral diplomatic activity, following the tri-party talks involving China, the DPRK and the United States in Beijing in April. On August 29, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi remarked that after the Beijing talks, the objective of achieving denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula had been reached among the parties concerned and the process to peacefully settle the crisis had begun.
