2-3, Jiang Zemin, Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chinese President, send condolence messages to family members of the dead sailors aboard a wrecked conventional submarine of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. The official Xinhua News Agency reported on June 13 that investigations found the accident was due to operational errors. The CMC severely disciplined responsible personnel.

9, The State Council promulgates the Regulations on Preparedness for and Response to Emergent Public Health Hazards`, which came into force with promulgation. The regulations are made up of six chapters and 54 articles, including general rules, prevention and emergency preparations, reporting and information release, emergency procedures, legal responsibility and supplementary articles.

12, The Red Cross Society of China announces that 10 Chinese nurses who have made great contributions to the country's medical cause are awarded the 39th Florence Nightingale Medal. Among the medallists is Ye Xin, Head Nurse of the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine who sacrificed her life in the fight against SARS. The Florence Nightingale Award is the top honor in international nursing and is presented every two years. By 2003, 38 Chinese nurses had been recognized with it.

21-22, Chinese mountaineers reach the summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Qomolangma, in two groups. The climbing was conducted to mark the 50th anniversary of the first scaling of the summit.

26-June 5, President Hu Jintao makes a state visit to Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. During his visit, Hu also attended the Third Summit Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Moscow, celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg and the North-South leaders' informal dialogue meeting in French spa town of Evian. This is Hu's first overseas trip since he assumed the Chinese presidency in March 2003.

26, The Information Office of the State Council issues the History and Development of Xinjiang white paper. It is the first white paper about the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China issued by the Chinese Government.
