The museum will tell the story of the Universiade as an event of global scale. |
Many residents and guests of Kazan have already heard about the Universiade Museum, located inside the walls of the Main International Centre (MIC). On June 29, the guests of the Universiade Village finally got the chance to quench their curiosity and see the museum exhibits. This unique project, built on the initiative of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate and the FISU International Education Centre (FISU IEC), will tell the story of the Universiade as an event of global scale.
The museum exhibition reflects the scale of Russia's preparations for the 27th World University Summer Games. The work lasted for 5 long years, starting from May 31, 2008, when Kazan won the bid in Brussels to hold the Games, until today, when the preparations are coming to an end and Kazan is starting to welcome members of sports delegations, participating athletes, officials, volunteers and fans. The museum organisers decided to tell about this period of the Games through photographs and newspaper articles. This simple idea surprised the first visitors to the museum with its originality.
The visitors' attention quickly fell to the bright signs, designed to tell the history of the World University Games. Here – a brief note about the place and time of the Universiade and information on the participating athletes.
The awards of the athletes, given to the museum by the athletes themselves, evoke special feelings of awe. Further on, the hall is filled with various stands dedicated to the mascots of the Games held in the USA, Serbia, China, Japan and other countries.
The museum also has its own mini-theatre. Here, films and news reports open the pages of the Universiade history. The first visitors were shown clips from 40 years ago when the Universiade was held in Moscow in 1973.
The Universiade Museum is open for cooperation and communication. There is a separate exhibition for the visitors to fill themselves. Anyone who wishes to make a contribution to the museum can bring their own materials that are somehow connected with the World University Games. The museum plans to further expand the exhibit as it gets more items.
Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko commented: "This is a wonderful idea, to open a university sport museum in Kazan. We will be supporting this museum and we will do everything to preserve and maintain it. This will be one of the most visited venues."
After the end of the 2013 Summer Universiade, the museum will become part of FISU IEC. It will function as an additional educational platform, holding various meetings with athletes, master сlasses from Universiade participants and other interesting events. For the duration of the Universiade, the museum may be visited by the direct participants of the Games. However, from September 15, the Universiade Museum will be open to the public.
