Jiang in Russia for Second SCO Summit
Chinese President Jiang Zemin flew into Russian city St. Petersburg Wednesday to attend the second summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, to be held June 7. Before flying to Russia, Jiang held separate meetings with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Hamid Karzai, chairman of the Afghanistan interim government in Almaty Wednesday.

County Party Chief Sentenced to Death
A county-level official was sentenced to death on Wednesday for his part in a tin mine flooding last July that killed 81 people in southwestern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
China to Set up First Arctic Research Station
China will set up its first ever arctic scientific research station in Longyearbyen, capital of the Svalbard Islands in Norway in July, Gao Dengyi, director of the China Yilite-Mornring Arctic Scientific Expedition and Research Team said in Beijing Wednesday.
16-Nation Summit on Asian Security Adopts Almaty Act
Political leaders from 16 countries attending the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia in the Kazakh city of Almaty yesterday reconfirmed their commitment to building a more peaceful and secure Asia through dialogue and cooperation when they endorsed the Almaty Act. The meeting also witnessed the signing of a Declaration on Eliminating Terrorism and Promoting Dialogue among Civilizations.
Jiang Meets Musharraf and Vajpayee, Calling for Peace in South Asia
While attending the first summit of CICA in Alma-Ata, Chinese President Jiang Zemin held separate meetings with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee June 4. He urged India and Pakistan to peacefully settle their disputes through negotiation and dialogue as tensions centered on the disputed Kashmir region continued.
China, Russia Propose Ban on Space Weapons
China and Russia have jointly proposed a ban on the use of weapons in outer space, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said June 4.
Two Cities Given Green Awards
Two more Chinese cities joined a list of the United Nation's greenest urban areas yesterday. The award, given by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), shows recognition for growing action in China to protect the environment in urban areas.
International Efforts Urged
to Root Out Terrorism
China reiterated on Tuesday its condemnation of, and opposition to, any form of terrorism and called for international efforts to root out such terrorist forces as "East Turkistan." "What I would like to point out emphatically is that China is a victim of terrorism too," Chinese President Jiang Zemin said at the summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), which opened Tuesday morning.

Mainland Offers Radar Data on Taiwan Air Crash
The Chinese mainland yesterday gave Taiwan authorities its radar data and written records relating to the May 25 crash of a Hong Kong-bound China Airlines jet. The Taiwan side said that information recorded near sea-level is needed to better track the fall of the debris of the crashed plane and locate the wreckage, of which only less than one percent has so far been retrieved.
