Statistics Tell the Tale
Qiu Xiaohua, deputy director general of the National Bureau of Statistics, summarized the national economic status for the first quarter of this year at a press conference sponsored by the State Council Information Office Wednesday. He also explained to the media how China’s statistical system works to provide consistent and reliable data.
Part of Yuanmingyuan to Be Restored to Original
Restoration work on Zhengjuesi (Enlightenment Temple), the only surviving building cluster in Yuanmingyuan (the Old Summer Palace), started a few days ago, and when that is complete, about one-fifth of Yuanmingyuan including Dagongmen (the Palace Gate) will be rebuilt.
China Publishes Photocopies of World's Earliest Encyclopedia
China published Wednesday for the first time photocopies of the world's earliest and greatest encyclopedia -- the Yongle Canon. It was compiled between AD 1403 and AD 1407 in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), containing 22,877 volumes in 11,095 books. "The Yongle Canon is a treasure of the world. Even a small part of it will be important for scholarship and any effort to publish it is remarkable," said Soren Edgren, editorial director of Chinese Rare Book Project, Princeton University.

Cooking Oil Resale 'Recipe for Disaster'
Government chiefs Wednesday reiterated a ban on the recycling of used edible oil after reports that a McDonald's restaurant in Wuhan had sold its discarded oil for re-use. An official report into allegations has concluded that McDonald's breached the ban in March when selling waste cooking oil to peddlers, who then resold it to small restaurants.
Hu's Visit to US Expected to Strengthen Ties
The forthcoming visit by Vice-President Hu Jintao to the United States will promote bilateral ties, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue at a regular briefing Tuesday. An Air China passenger plane enroute from Beijing to Pusan crashed Monday into a wooded hill in heavy fog, killing most of the 166 passengers and crew members on board. Rescuers said 39 people had survived the catastrophe, among which were 11 Chinese nationals.
