Tashkent Declaration Marks New Phase for SCO
Leaders attending the fourth summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) vowed Thursday to enhance joint efforts to safeguard regional peace and promote economic development. Chinese President Hu Jintao proposed that the SCO focus its attention on security and economic issues.
Gas Leak Sends Hundreds to Hospital
A laboratory phosgene gas leak has killed one, hospitalized 60 and sent at least 500 to emergency rooms for treatment in Fujian Province. Corridors and wards on the second, third and fourth floors of Fuzhou's Provincial Hospital were crowded with patients waiting to be examined or being treated.
Electricity Price Raised to Cool Down Economy
China raised the average price of electricity by 0.022 yuan per kilowatt/hour this week to cool down the overheated growth of some energy-gobbling industries and so help ease the power shortage.

Fixed Asset Investment Growth Slowing
Fixed asset investment rose 34.8 percent year-on-year in the first five months of 2004, a significant slowdown from the 42.8 percent growth of the first four months. Economic data released so far for May show factory output and money supply rising at their slowest pace in several months, fanning hopes that China is on course for a soft economic landing.

Guangzhou Moots Fund for One-child Parents
As more one-child parents approach retirement age, Guangzhou is considering adjusting one-child compensation standards and creating a fund to ensure families get the money owed them. Many retired one-child parents are already owed compensation but the budget to pay them is simply not in place, officials said during a conference last week.
Kodak Denies Monopolistic Accusations
US-based imaging giant Eastman Kodak, which commands 50 percent of China's film market, was accused last month of monopolistic practices in its China operation. But Kodak last week issued a statement, arguing that it has never done anything to circumvent the normal processes of market competition.
