Lab as Source of SARS Outbreak This Spring
A laboratory with China's national disease control and prevention center was found to be the source of the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) during April and May of this year, health officials said Thursday.
Shanghai Threatened by Water Shortage
The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources predicts that beginning from 2010, China will suffer serious water shortages. And Shanghai -- China's biggest city -- which is listed by the United Nations as one of the world's six cities to experience severe drinking-water crisis, is considering various methods to tackle the water shortage.
China Opposes Japan's Exploration Decision
China is gravely concerned about Japan's unilateral exploration decision in disputed waters in the East China Sea and has made solemn representations to the Japanese side through diplomatic channels, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Heritage Site Management to Be Questioned
During its ongoing 28th session, the World Heritage Committee is investigating 121 World Heritage sites to determine whether they are being damaged or endangered as a result of improper management. Four of the questioned sites are in China, but one -- the classical gardens of Suzhou -- has already been given the committee's stamp of approval.
Despite Progress, Much to Be Done in Henan AIDS Villages
The central government is substantially boosting its HIV/AIDS prevention and control budget this year, drafting formal regulations to control work in this field and expanding education and monitoring programs. A main focus of the government's concern is Henan Province, home to an estimated 16,000 of the country's HIV-positive citizens. Conspicuous progress has been made there in recent months, but it is only the beginning of a long road.
World Heritage Committee Begins Deliberations
The World Heritage Committee began discussing on Tuesday the 48 proposed additions to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Three of the historical sites submitted for consideration are in northeast China.
Extreme Weather Slams Country
As the rainy season arrives, floods threaten eastern and central China while the west and north continues to suffer drought. Governments at all levels have been alerted to take appropriate precautions, to be prepared for emergency action, and to be alert to secondary hazards such as pollution.
Clashes During NATO Summit Leave 30 Injured
Anti-NATO protesters hurling paving stones and gasoline bombs clashed with riot police in Istanbul Monday on the first day of a NATO summit, leaving around 30 people injured.
World Heritage Committee Session Opens
The 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee opened Monday in the garden city of Suzhou, in eastern China's Jiangsu Province. President Hu Jintao sent a congratulatory message and called on different countries and nationalities to strengthen dialogue to promote world peace and development.
Joint Maritime Rescue Drill Staged in South China Sea
China's maritime safety authorities staged a joint maritime search-and-rescue exercise Saturday in water off Sanya, Hainan Province. The drill is the first massive maritime exercise between China's mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
Differences Among Six Parties Narrowed
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the disputes among all parties participating in the third round of six-party talks on the nuclear issue in the Korean Peninsula were narrowed. The four-day talks concluded in Beijing Saturday morning.
